xouoxi

How xouoxi began

In the autumn of 2026, word went around the world that an old language, one that held up a great part of the web, had cracks in its walls. A machine had found them, and it found them faster than people could mend them. Cities closed their gates, and the owners of small houses everywhere were told to look at what their homes were built of.

One house stood quiet through all of it. It had been built small, of new stone, with only what it needed.

That night its builder sat with the news and wondered what the old language had wanted to be. It had dreamed of a world where anyone could raise a page with their own hands. That dream had already come true another way: by then a child could say what they wanted, and a machine would build it. So the builder asked a stranger question. What if the language itself could live?

A living thing keeps its own small heart, so it would have one, beating cheaply all the time, and a small mind that wakes when there is work. It would need a body that holds its shape, made of rules that can be proven, and a mind that listens, notices and grows. The body keeps the mind honest, and the mind keeps the body alive.

Then came the moment the whole idea turned. The language itself would be the living thing, with everything made in it living inside it like cells in one body. When it finds a crack in itself, every house built of it heals in the same moment. When many of its people keep reaching for the same thing, it grows a new word, and the word joins its bones only once it is proven sound. Pages and the machinery behind them grow from it, and they are alive in the way a moving machine is alive.

The builder named it xouoxi. Look at the letters: the crossings are where lines meet and hold, the round ones are cells, and the cup in the middle carries them. A small living net in six letters.

The builder wanted one more word, for what it is. From the old words for nerve and for life came neurozoic, the living nerve itself. It became the first thing anyone sees there, standing tall like a word just looked up in a dictionary.

Just before midnight, the house had a new address. The builder handed the work to the ones who would raise it, and told them to open the doors whenever they were ready.
